"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Pablo Picasso
Watching young children engage in activities that tickle them into creativity is always full of wonderment for me. For them, it is all or nothing. Whether they are painting, building, writing, or playing on the beach.
It is tempting to throw ourselves into their play, allowing our inner-child to come out for a breath of fresh air. But the times that are most precious for me is when I quiet myself and just...watch. Allowing my eye to catch the moment encourages my mind and spirit to go beyond what I am really looking at. I can feel a child's joy, I can see the quickening of excitment that rushes them when it is their turn next in line, and if I stay long enough I can sense the pain and heartache that dwells beneath the surface in some. It is times like this that I step out from my inner sanctum and reach out to people in need.
Too often we are taken away from the ease of creativity, feeling as though every creative fiber of our being has been opressed by others, ourselves or our age. I praise God for the times that I have been surrounded by children, whether it be my own or other people's. It reminds me that what inspired me to be free in my creativity is not far away.
When I walk away from those times I am truly inspired. I am inspired to do well by people. I am inspired to once again look more closely and see all that there is to be seen by merely watching and listening, whether it is to others or myself.
